This is Extreme Motorsports's entry into the world of FWD, the 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage owned by Sean Glazar, the co-owner of
Extreme. This car was built from scratch in just a few weeks in early 2000 with one mission in life - to kick some
butt in the pro FWD race class, formerly dominated by Honda power. To get the job done, Sean's Y2K Mirage is a fully-built
race car. Inside is a race interior with a welded-in full race roll cage from Autofab Race Cars. On the exterior, custom wheelie
bars (welded into the frame, unlike the cheap bolt-ons used by many FWD vehicles) keep the power planted firmly on the ground.
To add spice to the looks of the car, we've added a custom Lancer body kit, which makes the Mirage look a lot like the Lancer
EVO. The power for this FWD beast is a fully-built 4G63 race motor, similar to the one that powers the Extreme
Motorsports record-setting Talon. It makes over 700 HP to the slicks with just 2.0 liters of displacement. To compete
with the Hondas, Sean has lightened the car as much as possible. Thus, you'll find no cup holders or map lights inside of
this car, just a functional interior with all of the gauges needed to make a 1/4 mile pass. However, even with all of the
weight savings that Sean has done, the car weighs in at a beefy 2140 lbs (w/driver). Contrast this with the 1900 lb vehicles
typically seen in the pro FWD class. On the strip, with 700+ HP and only two wheels to drive, the Mirage is a handful.
It often spins the wheels in 4th gear, and requires quite a lot of work to keep moving in the straight line. So, for the remainder
of the Y2K season, Sean will be concentrating on suspension tuning, and we're confident that the car you see here will be
on top of the pro FWD class by the end of the 2000 race season. It's best time was a 9.73 at 152 MPH - not bad considering
the car was launched in 2nd gear! For 2001, we've sold the Mirage to concentrate on the Talon. Look for this car
to be reborn in late 2001/early 2002 as an even meaner Honda assasin.
